An Ideal Husband

Following their acclaimed RSC Open Stages production of The Merry Wives of Windsor in May 2011, Consensus performed Oscar Wilde’s timeless political comedy An Ideal Husband in and around Stratford-upon-Avon from Wednesday 9th May to Saturday 12th May 2012 at the following venues.

Wednesday 9th May: Tiddington Community Centre (proceeds to The Friends of St James’ Church, Alveston)
Thursday 10th May and Thursday 11th May: The Civic Hall, Stratford-upon-Avon
Saturday 12th May: Henley-in-Arden Memorial Hall (proceeds to the Memorial Hall funds)

In one his best and most enduring plays, Wilde’s trademark wit is skillfully woven around a gripping story of social and political scandal in which he explores the corrupting effects of power, blackmail at the highest level, swindle at the Stock Exchange and the all-redeeming power of love that triumphs in the end. The play has also been adapted to include some of Giacomo Puccini’s most glorious music to create a deliciously enchanting evening of intrigue and entertainment.

Some Reviews….

“The cast delivered the usual brilliant pithy wit with aplomb and no-one more so than the ever accomplished Carol Roache as the devious, underhand, blackmailing ice maiden Mrs Cheavely. Puccini’s gorgeous music was set to a new libretto by Mr Johnson to enable the continuation of Wilde’s story telling and every one of the singers performed admirably. Top class singing from Tim & Claire Johnson as Lord and Lady Chiltern. The simply delightful voice of Viv Tomlinson as Miss Mabel Chiltern and once again the outstanding Joan Self as Lady Markby who gave us a masterclass in comic timing.” (Guide2 Stratford)

“Consensus has built up its reputation in Stratford and the surrounding area for being able to blend beautiful operatic music with well-chosen popular plays in their unique productions, and its staging of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband at Stratford Civic Hall last week was no exception….Each characterisation was faultless, offering the audience a hugely entertaining interpretation that brought out Wilde’s rich and distinctive wit.” (Stratford Herald)
