Country Wife

After the sparkling wit and political intrigue of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband and the captivating music of Puccini in 2012, our next production was The Country Wife, the classic Restoration comedy by William Wycherley, which we performed in May 2013.  First written in 1675 and performed regularly ever since, this 17th Century situation comedy set in the fashionable West End of London laughs at the social lives of the leisured classes.

The Country Wife.

The story centres around Harry Horner, the loveable rogue whose highly successful plan to chase (and be chased by) the bored wives of wealthy but gullible businessmen is hilariously thrown into confusion by the arrival of Margery Pinchwife, an innocent country wife and her insanely jealous husband.  As her eyes are opened to the excitement of the London social whirl she falls head over heels in love with Horner and her naive ignorance threatens to unravel the carefully balanced love affairs of Horner and his gang of ‘virtuous ladies’.

The Country Wife.

The bubbling and light-hearted action of the play was matched by equally effervescent music taken from some of Rossini’s most popular comic operas, including The Barber of Seville, The Italian Girl in Algiers and La Cenerentola, which together created an evening of laughter and entertainment.

Once again, our wonderful cast combined the best of local acting and singing talent to bring off another excellent run of performances, spreading comic opera and drama to a wider audience than ever before whilst helping local charities to raise £1400 for their good causes.
